Spending time in the scripture is an important part of growing into a mature Christian. As people go, we tend to forget things if we are not grounded, in this case, the Word of God. That's why it is good to constantly be reminded of the simple things of God. The more you spend time in the scriptures, the more deep a relationship you will have with God, and He will give you more revelation of His Word through the Holy Spirit. The book of John is a great place to start. There you will see who Jesus is and how much He loved the world, so much that He would die for it. Galatians is an excellent book to learn about God's grace, and how salvation is a free gift. You will learn how some people tried to convince others that you need to mix a little bit of "work" into your salvation; the Apostle Paul made it very clear that we cannot work for it, but God paid the price in full. Paul told the Ephesians, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and not that of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." Eph 2:8
So, you see how important it is to study the bible in all of it's context, and not just a little here, and a little there? Taking scripture out of context and coming up with your own interpretations other than what God is saying, is an easy thing to do.
Pray and ask God to help you understand what you are reading; the Holy Spirit will guide you.
